Alcoholism in the workplace- Alcohol Awareness Month

April is Alcohol Awareness Month. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Inc ,”40% of industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol and alcoholism.”

Alcoholism in the workplace can lead to a higher incidence of workplace injuries or fatalities, loss of production, absenteeism, tardiness or sleeping on the job, poor decision making and a decrease in co-worker morale. It is a very serious issue and the NCADD estimates that close to 15 million full time workers in the U.S. can be considered heavy drinkers.

Luckily the workplace has shown to be a very effective place to encourage the treatment of alcoholism through an Employee Assistance Program. To learn more about EAP’s please visit the NCADD online.
